Wings win tight battle over Huskies

PORTLAND -- Brian Leighton recorded two points to lead the Red Wings to a 4-1 win over the Huskis late on Thursday night.

The Red Wings got off on the right foot defeating the short benched Huskies. Adam Casey stopped 19 of the 20 shots he faced.

Gary Goslin started the scoring off for the Wings (1-0-0) with just under a minute and a half to go in the opening period. Hayley LeBel recorded her first goal of the season with a wrist shot through traffic to tie the game up a minute into the third period.

Leighton would capitalize on a team effort two-on-one with Ryan Denison to score the GWG with 8:28 left in the final frame. The Wings would go on to score two more goals (Peppo (1) at 6:11, and McBrady (1) at 00:01 on an empty net.)

The Red Wings will be on the road next week as they visit the Portland FireFighters (0-1-0) and the Huskies will look to turn things around in their home opener against the Whalers.
